Custom fields
Add fields of your own to assets and vulnerability findings, guarded by each module's own permission and archived rather than deleted.
On this page
Two modules let you add fields of your own: Assets and Vulnerabilities. This page explains how custom fields work in both, and points you to the specifics for each module.
Where custom fields live#
Each module's fields are configured on that module's own Settings tab, so the permission that guards the module guards its fields. People who can see the module can read its field list; only people who can manage the module can add or change fields.
| Module | Where to configure | Where the field appears |
|---|---|---|
| Assets | Assets > Settings, under Custom fields | On the asset form under "This workspace also asks", and on the asset record under Also recorded |
| Vulnerabilities | Vulnerabilities > Settings, under Custom fields | On every finding under "Also recorded", where anybody with manage rights can fill it in |
Fields appear in the order they are listed in settings.
Add a field#
Open the module's settings
Go to the module's Settings tab. Under Custom fields, click Add field.
Name it and choose the type
Enter the Field name and choose the Type. For a choice field, list the Choices one per line. Add Helper text if people need a hint; it shows under the field on the form.
Decide whether it is required
Switch on Required if every record must have it. It applies the next time each record is saved, not to records already stored.
Add it
Click Add field. It appears on the form the next time somebody opens it.
Field types#
| Type | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Text | One line, up to 2000 characters. |
| Long text | Several lines. |
| Number | A whole number or a decimal. |
| Date | A single date. |
| Choice | One of a list you set. |
| Yes or no | A tick box. |
You cannot change a field's type once it exists, so pick it carefully.
Change or retire a field#
- Edit renames a field or changes its choices, helper text or whether it is required. Values already written stay attached to it.
- Archive stops collecting a field. Fields are archived rather than deleted, so a value written last year stays readable after you stop collecting it.
- Restore brings an archived field back.
Custom fields and import#
The asset import fills Verity's own columns only. Set custom field values on each asset after you import it. See Import assets.
